“And in their midst, a boy made pleasant music with a clear-toned lyre, and thereto sang sweetly the Linus-song with his delicate voice.” – Homer’s Iliad, Book 18, 570-72.
This is a replica of a chelys ancient Greek lyre, named after Linus of Thrace, a legendary musician, the son of Muse Calliope and Apollo, and the first leader of lyric song. He had many well-known pupils, and two of the greatest renown, Thamyris, and Orpheus. This lyre has 5 strings, which was a common number in Classical Greece for most of the lyres used for teaching music both to children and adults.
Quoting Lina Palera, Head of Music Programs at Lyre Academy, “the fewer the strings, the quicker the advancement of our lyre playing, as it forces us to use more advanced techniques from the very beginning!”
LUTHIEROS Lyre of Linus has 5 strings, and it can be considered as an introductory musical instrument for anyone willing to learn how to play the lyre, both for children and adults. With the use of harmonics and other advanced playing techniques, a 5-strings lyre can produce notes on two to three octaves, along with the sharps!
