President Barack Obama has been awarded the 2009 Novel Peace Prize. The Norwegian Nobel Committee said Obamas efforts against nuclear weapons and his work in strengthening international diplomacy are among the reasons he merits the prestigious award.
Hes been in office less than a year, but the committee says that since his arrival on the international stage, dialogue has become the method of choice for resolving the toughest international conflicts.
For the committee Obama is a spokesperson for global politics and for the points of view the organization has defended since its creation.
Obama is the third sitting president to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, which he will receive in Oslo on December 10th of this year.
Last July the president visited the pope for the first time during the G8 summit held in Italy, where they talked about issues like abortion, immigration and the conflict in the Middle East.
