In this episode of Archinest, we explore the transformation of a classic Victorian terrace house in Carlton, Australia, designed by 4site Architecture. This single-fronted double brick home, once dark and cramped, has been revitalized into a light-filled, modern family residence.
Facing challenges such as limited space and poor natural light, the architects cleverly retained the original front bedrooms and added a double-story extension to include a new bathroom, laundry, living area, kitchen, dining space, and an additional bedroom with an en suite. The design cleverly incorporates a centralized service core, optimizing space and functionality while maintaining a seamless flow between the open-plan living areas and the outdoor space.
Key features of this renovation include a strategic light court for enhanced natural light and ventilation, a north-facing living room extension that captures sunlight, and a secluded roof deck providing private outdoor space. The master bedroom and study area have been designed to balance natural light with privacy.
