Crimea’s self-styled leader has said the Muslim Tatar’s main representative body “does not exist”. Sergei Aksyonov told Russian media that any group which didn’t recognize Crimea as part of Russia could face punishments including expulsion, depending on the outcomes of a criminal assessment.

Last week, armed military and law enforcement personnel raided the Tatar’s Mejlis assembly building in the regional capital Simferopol. Despite an extensive search uncovering nothing incriminating, the Tatar’s were still handed a notice giving them 24 hours to vacate the premises. The minority group has defiantly refused not to lower the Ukrainian flag from the building, despite threats of violence and prosecution for supporting ‘extremism’.
