In Vietnam, rampant illegal fishing is being facilitated by child labour. Children as young as 11 are being put to work in dirty and unsafe conditions aboard long-distance fishing vessels. Gross overfishing, poor governance, and a shocking lack of transparency have created this human and ecological tragedy.
Illegal seafood caught by slaves and children could be on supermarket shelves across the EU and US.
Illegal fishing thrives in the shadows, avoiding scrutiny by government, industry and consumers. To stop it, global fisheries must become much more transparent.
EJF's ten principles for global transparency in the fishing industry are simple, low-cost measures that can be implemented today by any country. The adoption of these ten basic principles would transform fisheries and secure legal, sustainable and ethical seafood.
Eat sustainable seafood. Demand transparency.
