Amazon fires warehouse worker who led Staten Island strike for more coronavirus protection

Right before World War 1 the coal miners of america were fighting hard and dying for their rights.

They were urged to stop fighting for their rights and to support the war effort and were promised that afterward they would be taken care of.

The coal miners rallied around the flag in hopes that Uncle Sam would stay true to his word.

Spoiler: He didn't

Did anyone expect anything different?

Expect? No. I was hopeful that the world's richest person would take a step back during a pandemic and reconsider the optics over profits. But then you don't become the world's richest man by giving into everyone's demands. What this tells me, as a sort of barometer for businesses reactions, is that even a pandemic won't lead us into better work environments and pay, health care for citizens. It's simply never going to just be given.

I'm surprised they didn't shut the whole warehouse down. Amazon has been known to close entire call centers at the faintest sniff of unionization.

Well, how true is this? Because if so, yeah, correct move

Yeah, he was exposed to a corona positive coworker and told to self quarantine. They even warned him before this not to come on site and to wait until 14 days if he wanted to do his protest.

I'm torn. Fuck Bezos with a whole Amazon fulfillment center. But also this, from the article:

"An Amazon spokesperson confirmed to CNBC that Smalls was fired, saying he received “multiple warnings” for violating social distancing guidelines and refusing to remain quarantined after coming into close contact with an associate who tested positive for the virus."

Is the US under lock down or not? In India Amazon is not delivering or taking orders due to the lock down. So employees are safe and desk job employees are working from home. Why is Amazon still operating in the US?

Amazon employees are probably considered essential. There are two things you should know:

Lockdown policies and stay-at-home orders aren't consistent against the U.S.

Many of them aren't strongly enforced, and many don't take them seriously.
