The plane carrying Indian Paratroopers and Air Force Personnel had to land on an airport with no lights and a very short runway. Operation Cactus was one of a kind as it was the first mission led by Indian Armed forces on a foreign land. On request of Maldives foreign minister, India took a swift action to avert the Maldives crisis.
The attempted coup was carried out by Abdullah Luthufi with the support of 80 people. One group attacked at Radio and Telecommunications centre while the other tried to take over the Presidential Palace of Maldives.
