On 4 May the German partially surrendered on the Lüneburg Heath (Lüneburger Heide) to the British under Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery. It was the first (partial) surrender of the Germans towards the end of World War II, which officially ended on 8 May 1945 (the Eastern Europe on 9 May 1945).
