Heart of Darkness is a dark but beautiful novella describing the journey of English sailor Charles Marlow into the Belgian Congo. He works for a Belgian trading company and his primary mission is to bring back from a station upstream the River Congo one of the company's traders called Kurtz. At the end of the nineteenth century, the entire region is controlled by Belgium and the whole enterprise is one of the most infamous chapters of colonial history. The book served as the basis for the 1979 movie Apocalypse Now, which situates it in Vietnam and Cambodia.
My overall judgment on this book is that it is fantastic and should be read by everyone.
