Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR): Patient Success Story | Aortic Stenosis
Dr. A. Sharath Reddy, Senior Interventional Cardiologist, Medicover Hospitals, Explains briefly about TAVR.
Aortic Valve Stenosis patients usually present with breathing difficulty on Exertion, or Episodes of the sudden loss of consciousness, or sometimes with heart failure. These are the symptoms of Aortic Valve Stenosis. The moment the patient becomes symptomatic, their life span is limited. Most of the accumulated Data says they won't live beyond 3 to 5 years once they become symptomatic. That is why doctors treat these patients once they become symptomatic.
After diagnosing with Aortic Valve Stenosis, there are two methods of treatment for these patients.
-Open Surgical replacement of valve ( Available for more than 4 Decades).
-TAVR Method - Process can be done by giving only 2mm incisions in the Groin, by minimizing surgical complications to the patients.
For patients who have comorbidities like renal problems and lung problems, the risk is more than 8% to 10%. In such patients, TAVR constitutes the best way of replacing the valve with minimal complications.
Steps to perform TAVR:
-Complete assessment of Heart Valve its Sizes and Dimensions, and Aorta its Sizes and Dimensions by Cardiac CT.
-Based on Cardiac CT accessing the entire anatomy of the Heart, Heart Valve, and Aorta
-Accessing possible complications after TAVR and how to circumvent those problems.
-Based on all these Dimensions, Drawing the plan of surgery to the patients (Plan A, Plan B, Plan C).
-During Surgery, Executing the plan based on the Cardiac CT.
Planning constitutes a major part of this TAVR Procedure.
Pradeep Reddy shares his experience on how his father, Ramsudhakar Reddy, went through TAVR Procedure and got back to leading his normal life. He was overwhelmed with the type of treatment and services that Medicover Hospitals provided. He was pleased that a critical case was handled so well, and it translated into a success story.
