CLEAR COMMUNICATION is one of the biggest issues I see between handlers and their dogs. Here we are teaching this dog that a command is NOT a command unless it is premised by her own working name. By setting up a clear command structure in this manner, the dog can be taught to ignore irrelevant commands (like those intended for another dog or from other people) and block out the “white noise” of the environment, yet be ready and confident to do what we ask at a moments notice.
You can see the progression of learning that takes place in just this short 1 minute sequence of events. We let the dog mess up and give her ample opportunity to work through it which builds confidence.
We also are using Premack to give us the tool of motivation to actually not go after the ball without any compulsion.
