The United States and the European Union have increasingly focused their strategic attention on the Indo-Pacific and continue to foster dialogue and coordination as transatlantic partners. Lisa Curtis, Director of the Indo-Pacific Security Program at the Center for a New American Security, shares her assessment of the priorities of Washington and Brussels and points out where their interests overlap and where approaches differ.
After the EU foreign ministers adopted conclusions on the Indo-Pacific in April 2021, a fully-fledged strategy for cooperation in the Indo-Pacific was presented in September 2021. Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) in Asia brought together senior officials, policy practitioners and eminent experts to unpack what the EU’s announcements mean for the region.
This series is part of the FES regional project “Navigating the New Geopolitics of Asia and Global Order of Tomorrow”.
