Turmeric may relieve some of the symptoms associated with kidney disease. About 14 percent of adults live with chronic kidney disease and many sufferers turn to herbs for kidney failure and other renal disorders that may not respond to conventional treatment.
Current research suggests that curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, may help slow the progression of chronic kidney disease and prevent kidney problems due to its antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. Compared to other medications, it's safe and well-tolerated at higher doses. Although the antioxidant has poor bioavailability, which means that your body can’t fully absorb it. To reap its benefits, it's necessary to mix it with a compound called piperine, an active compound in black pepper.
This combo could increase curcumin's bioavailability by 2,000 percent, as reported in the new research. When you buy turmeric or curcumin supplements, make sure to check the label to make sure they contain piperine. Leakage of cytokines and other pro-inflammatory compounds in the gut increases intestinal permeability which may lead to chronic kidney disease. Curcumin could help reduce inflammation in the gut and maybe improve their symptoms. Turmeric is generally safe in healthy people when used in smaller doses. However, it could cause bad reactions in some people.
The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health warns against using turmeric in high doses or for long periods of time cause it may trigger digestive problems like constipation, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. These all could be common side effects. Overall, check with your doctor if this spice could be beneficial for your kidney health.
