For this year's Self-Denial Appeal we're looking at how The Salvation Army around the world is caring for creation and responding to climate change. In this episode we will be speaking with Yusak Tampai in Indonesia and hearing about the work they are doing to support the community.
Self-Denial is central to our mission: The Appeal raises funds to support to Salvation Army mission and ministry in countries around the world. It's called Self-Denial as funds are raised through denying ourselves in order to be able to contribute. In 1886 when General William Booth was trying to raise funds for The Salvation Army's international work, one of his officers pledged to go without pudding for a whole year and give the money to the fund. Booth thought this sacrifice was too great, but liked the idea of people uniting together to deny having an everyday expense for a short time and donating the money saved to The Salvation Army. Thus Self-Denial was born.
