Dell PowerEdge 2950 server memory guide for proper configuration and installation. The 2950 is a 2U server operating on dual Intel 5100, 5200, 5300 or 5400 series processors. Part of Dell’s 9th Generation, this server comes equipped with 8 DIMM slots utilizing DDR2 memory. This is the 2U older brother to the 1950 which supports the exact same memory and processors. There is only one type of memory for the Dell PowerEdge 2950 server. That option is Fully Buffered memory, also known as FBIMMs. ECC Registered (RDIMM) memory modules simply do NOT work with the Dell PowerEdge 2950 server. Do not purchase DIMMs for 2970 and think you can install in 2950. They just are not compatible and will not work. These are two separate styles of memory altogether.
The max memory configuration for your Dell 2950 server depends on the generation of 2950 you have. You can locate your generation on the rackmount ear. There will be roman numerals. I = Gen 1.
