This video shows how to throw, trim, and glaze a wide rim bowl on the pottery wheel. This is the narrated version of the video with my description of the process over ambient studio sounds.
To make this bowl, I start with 3 lbs, 12 oz of wedged clay and center, open, and pull the walls. After bringing it up, I begin shaping it with a metal rib, both changing the profile of the bowl and removing slip. I'm throwing this on an absorbent Hydrobat, so after throwing I let it dry under plastic until leather hard.
Next, I trim the bowl to even the walls and create a foot. I stop and push gently against the wall as I trim. Once there is a slight "flex" to the wall, I have trimmed enough in that area and the wall is thin enough.
After trimming, I paint slip or underglaze on the outside of the bowl. In this video, I'm using a white slip and I paint two coats. Then the bowl is bisque fired.
For glazing, I generally layer a white glaze over a clear glaze. I start by cleaning the bisque with a damp sponge, and then mixing and screening the first glaze. I pour the inside, then the outside. Next, I pour the second layer of glaze, and for the rim either pour it, or paint it on as I do in this video. After a light clean up, the bowl is ready for the glaze fire.
