Women in the Afghan capital Kabul have held a demonstration to demand that Taliban rulers respect their rights. The December 28, 2021, protest took place two days after the hardline group’s Ministry of Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice issued a decree saying that women may not travel distances of more than 72km (45 miles) unless accompanied by a male relative. The Taliban has promised a more moderate form of Islamic rule than when the group was last in power 20 years ago, but many Afghans remain sceptical as the country’s economic crisis worsens and many women struggle as sole family breadwinners.
