Dr. Joshua Selsby, assistant professor, Animal Science, Iowa State University, Ames, said there’s been long-standing interest in understanding how heat stress limits feed efficiency in swine. In muscle we have found evidence of inflammation, metabolic dysfunction, and oxidative stress. The goal is to use this information to develop practical and economically viable interventions to limit the negative effects of heat stress.
