How does publishing work?

In this video I talk about some of the roles inside a typical publishing house. These vary/overlap according to size (no two publishers are the same) but should give you some indication of what everyone does.

Hopefully this will be interesting if you’re a writer and you want to know who you’ll be dealing with once you’re published. Or if you’re interested in a career in the book world.

I chat about editors (and commissioning editors) and what they do. Then I talk about publicity (PR), sales (they deal with selling to traditional bookshops, chains like Waterstone’s and Barnes & Noble, supermarkets, and ebooks (metadata is important), marketing (metro posters, advertising, social media adverts), and production. I’ll talk more about cover designers in another video.
