That the show deviates from Margaret Atwood’s novel when it comes to June Osbourne’s name? In Hulu’s television adaptation of author Margaret Atwood’s iconic dystopian novel of the same name, the show’s creators took several creative liberties in order to update the story with a more modern interpretation of the text. As well as taking a more multicultural approach to casting, the show is also more explicit when it comes down to the main character’s name. In the books, June Oscbourne’s real name is never revealed and is only hinted at. June is referred to by her patronymic Gilead-given name “Offred” throughout the story. Atwood has said of the update, which was used first in the 1990 film adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale, that “that was not my original thought, but it fits, so readers are welcome to it if they wish.”
