Welcome to Dancehall Tours a series where we interview artists about how cannabis plays a part in their music.
Today our host Pantason interviews Reggae artiste Jesse Royal. Jesse Royal was born in St James Parish, Jamaica to a family of Maroon ancestry and Rasta faith. The Royal family relocated to Kingston in 1997 to accept a job at a telecom company, where Jesse became friends with Daniel Bambata Marley, son of reggae artist Ziggy Marley.
Blessed with a voice that captures the pain and hunger of a ‘downtrodden’ people; Royal’s militant character and profound lyricism caught the heart of heralded reggae producer, Philip ‘Fatis’ Burrell. Fatis Burrell, affectionately called ‘Father’ had a great and pure impact on the ‘old soul’ of Jesse; as he credits him as an invaluable inspiration and one of the most influential individuals that he has ever encountered.
In 2015, Vogue Magazine listed Jesse Royal as part of a greater ongoing "Reggae Revival" movement (along with other such artists as Chronixx, Jah9 and Protoje) happening in Jamaica and the rest of the world, revitalising the genre of roots reggae. In 2016 he featured on the Ragin fyah album ( Everlasting ) in a song called Humble. In 2017 he recorded the album Lily of da Valley, released by Easy Star Records. The album topped the Billboard Reggae Albums chart.
