IMMUNONUTRITION #7: FOOD ALLERGIES- As the gut immune system is being established and encounters a variety of foods and nutrients, your immune system recognizes most foods as healthy and does not mount an allergic reaction. However, there are nine foods known to cause food allergies in some individuals. The nine most common foods are peanuts, eggs, milk, shellfish, tree nuts, soy, wheat gluten, shellfish, and sesame (see slide). Peanut allergy is the most common and this allergy in children increased 21 percent from 2010 to 2016 while allergy to shellfish increased 7 percent. Lactose intolerance often called milk allergy is actually an inability to digest milk sugar called lactose intolerance. Symptoms include skin rashes, coughing, wheezing, mucus congestion, nausea, stomach cramping, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, fainting, and anxiety. Some allergists practice purposely giving small amounts of the food substance by injection or as a powder to establish tolerance. This method works about half the time. This needs to be done carefully by a physician as allergies can be life-threatening. Emergency kits with an injectable drug to stop the allergic reaction is carried by those who have suffered a severe reaction after eating peanuts or shellfish. A less diverse Microbiome due to cleaner environments for young children is one theory of why allergies have become more common.
