Fumigation: Fumigation is a method in which we use formaldehyde and potassium permanganate chemicals in a predefined ratio. By adding potassium permanganate to formaldehyde a reaction takes place and it generates fumes that effectively kill bacteria, fungus, and their spores. This is a very effective method to control the contamination in a controlled area.
Fogging: Nowadays fogging is used in pharmaceuticals to control microbial contamination in a controlled area. For fogging we require a fogger machine and fogging solutions. Different disinfectants are also used for fogging as claimed by the vendor which can effectively control the area but hydrogen peroxide and silver ion solution are commonly used for fogging purposes which is in the market under different brand names. ULV ( Ultra-low volume) foggers are generally used for fogging. By these fogger machines solution is sprayed in the area in form of an aerosol. The small particles of disinfectant solution suspend in the air for a long time and kill all the air-borne bacteria, fungus, and spores. This is also a very effective way to control contamination. So, Instead of so much effectiveness why do different regulatory agencies ban fumigation with a formaldehyde solution and potassium permanganate? the reason is that formaldehyde is carcinogenic ( cancer-causing) in nature and there is a risk of cancer associated with this to the personnel who is handling formaldehyde. It is not safe for the personnel. There are also other drawbacks like fumigation with formaldehyde causes irritation to the eyes and nose. After fumigation with formaldehyde, there is a requirement for de-fumigation of the area in which AHU (Air Handling Unit) has to be continuously run for a few hours without any activity to remove the residues from the air and cleaning and moping of equipment and area is also required. But in the case of hydrogen peroxide and silver in solution, it is safe for the personnel and no residues are left after fogging as it decomposes into water and nascent oxygen. There is no requirement for de-fogging and cleaning of equipment and area to remove the residues of this solution
Fumes: an amount of gas or vapor that smells strongly or is dangerous to inhale. An aerosol (abbreviation of "aero-solution") is a suspension of fine solid particles or liquid droplets in air or another gas. Aerosols can be natural or anthropogenic. Examples of natural aerosols are fog.
