Hi everyone, I am Dr Astha Dayal and I am the lead consultant gynaecologist at CK Birla Hospital in Gurgaon. So, today we gonna talk about the importance of eggs in pregnancy and whether it is safe to have eggs in pregnancy? So, first of all, let’s talk about how important is to eat eggs during pregnancy? Eggs are a good source of protein and eggs have a lot of vitamins and minerals such as vitamin B, choline, and amino acids that are good for your skin, hair and immunity.
Eggs also contain good fats like we advise gestational diabetic patients to have low carbohydrates meals, so, eggs are low carb, high protein and high-fat meals which is good nutrition during pregnancy. But still, we have a lot of doubts like should we eat eggs during pregnancy? This is because we need to know that if we have raw eggs or unpasteurised meats or eggs, we can feel some discomfort in the stomach or we can have an infection like salmonella or hysteria which is dangerous for pregnancy.
So, if you are eating eggs during pregnancy, the only thing you have to be careful about is that you must have well-cooked eggs or pasteurised eggs. Now, how we will ensure that eggs are well cooked? If you are eating a boiled egg then it should not be a soft boiled egg or a runny egg, it should be boiled for 10-12 minutes and the yellow part gets farmed and eaten hard-boiled egg. If you are eating scrambled eggs then ensure that the eggs are not moisturised and are fully cooked, or if you are eating fried eggs then fry the egg for 2-3 minutes from both sides.
If you are making anything from raw eggs and have a habit of tasting the raw batter, then avoid doing this because it contains raw eggs that can infect you. If eggs are well cooked then there is no risk, also if you are making homemade salad dressing and using raw eggs or making homemade monies those also contain raw eggs, so avoid using those. If you are purchasing bottled products from the market or processed monies, or cookies and they contain eggs, then those products are safe to consume.

One more thing, some people think that eggs are warm and we should not eat in the first trimester, but medically there is no such restriction, in allopathic medicine, we don’t consider it as warm and it's okay to have if they are well cooked so that you don’t face any kind of stomach infection and can have all the nutrients.
