00:00 Bow Tie Introduction
Bowties are a unique addition to a classic wardrobe. They not only make for very impressive and flattering neckwear, but they also come with a deep and interesting history to them.
Much like a modern necktie, a bow tie is a piece of fabric that is tied around the collar of a shirt, but unlike a hanging necktie, a bow tie is tied with a central knot, with the decorative fabric being displayed at either end.
01:30 Bow Tie History
We can’t look at the history of bow ties without looking at neckties in general which are descendants of the strips of cloth worn around the neck of Croatian soldiers. These were originally referred to as ‘Croats’, after the soldiers which in turn became ‘cravat’, or ‘la cravate’ in French and "Cravat" in English.
So as the people adopted neckwear into their everyday dress, the cravat would develop and take on many styles. But it was much earlier, around the 1680s, that a certain style was becoming extremely popular: the bow tie!

10:20 Bow Tie Materials
Nowadays, bow ties can be (and often are) made out of just about anything whilst there are some pretty “out-there” materials used. Generally speaking, the most readily available bow ties on the market nowadays will be made from synthetic fabrics.
High-quality bow ties are found when crafted from natural fibers: 11:53 a. Silk

15:15 Bow Tie Styles
The shape that your bow is tied into is predetermined when it is cut and sewn. And the size of your bow tie should be proportionate to your face. It’s important to note that the overall shape of a bow tie has also been subject to many different styles throughout the years. So although some of those are certainly quite interesting styles to choose from, we suggest sticking to a small selection of classic styles.
