This video is about New York's new sealing law which will take effect in October of 2017. The law is quite broad in that it allows for the sealing of both misdemeanor and felony criminal convictions.
1. You can seal up to 2 criminal convictions
2. You have to wait 10 years from sentencing date to seal
3. You can't seal: serious, sexual, or violent crimes
New York doesn't have an expungement law so sealing is the next best thing. While expungement vacates (clears the record) sealing merely covers it to public and private view.
Sealing is helpful to future job applications and background checks which will not reveal a sealed record.
Discuss with a defense attorney whether you qualify to file a motion to seal your past criminal history.
Every court, judge, and case is different. Consult with a local defense attorney to discuss your options and defenses.
I believe your defense attorney should realistically assess your complete situation both in the short and long term. What you can get from the court and what you can get from the DMV.
