In this video you can hear the Fugue from Louis Vierne's 1. Organ Symphony played on my Noorlander Avanti III Hauptwerk organ. It is recorded on the sample set of Oloron-Sainte-Marie by Piotr Grabowski. It has very fast grown to be my top 5 best Hauptwerk organ - it is just that good to my ears.
The subject of the fugue starts with an arpeggio of a diminished chord and then a A7 to Dm. It gives the fugue a clear harmonic structure always having the minor 7 to lead the listener to the next stage of the music. In the end the fugue slowly but steady dissolves itself. Then a small toccata-like period is introduced followed by a grand finale at the end having the subject being augmented and stretched out in fortissimo.
Louis Vierne wrote 6 organ symphonies and famously held the position of organist at the iconic Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris for many years. The 1. organ symphony in my ears is the most easy to listen to and many of the movements has a clear A-B-A form. As you get further and further into the symphonies the harmonic language gets more and more complicated and especially the 5. organ symphony is highly complex and much more demanding to listen to.
