The advice is pretty unanimous- when taking succulent cuttings they should be dried before being planted. But why and for how long?
As a grower I completely agree with the advice on drying succulent cuttings. The wound after the cut is an invitation for harmful bacteria and fungus that can really harm, even kill a plant.
But I would also say that some of the advice can be a little over the top. About 24 hrs should be enough for a cutting to dry, though more may be needed for larger cuttings or when it’s humid and cold. You don’t need to be drying for more that 3-4 days.
When a cut is made a protective coating called callus grows over the wound. This will then allow healing and in many cases, especially with succulents, promote new growth.
Even though, cuttings will not necessarily always rot if they are not dried before hand, they sure can. Always dry you cuttings.
