This scene was deleted from Midsommar due to being too good.
Director Ari Aster was heartbroken when A24 told him to remove this scene from the final cut, saying, “I guess they just couldn’t handle the Ari Aster style.”
The scene was reshot with alternate dialogue and more intense editing because, according to Aster, “The studio wanted it to be more dramatic. I didn’t want to do it so they allowed me to actually kill the actor as a compromise.”
The original cut of Midsommar includes many lines of dialogue and editing decisions not included in the final film, including a cameo appearance from the Nostalgia Critic, at least 57 audio/visual references to the 2003 live-action Cat in the Hat, and the use of “Guillotine” by Death Grips during the maypole scene. Debates over the ethics of these studio-mandated cuts have become widespread in the film industry.
