Tamper Resistant Receptacles
Tamper Resistant Receptacles (TRRs) provide a simple, affordable, reliable, and permanent solution to help prevent anyone, especially small children, from sticking keys, pins and any other object into a receptacle causing injury. And those plastic covers on every outlet are no longer needed!
TRRs give automatic protection and look just like ordinary outlets, but are designed with spring-loaded receptacle cover plates that close off the receptacle openings, or slots.
How Do They Work?
When equal pressure is simultaneously applied to both sides, the receptacle cover plates open to allow the standard plug to make contact with the receptacle contact points. Without this simultaneous pressure, the cover plates remain closed, preventing insertion of foreign objects. Exterior covers are no longer necessary!
TRRs have proven to be so effective that the National Electrical Code (NEC) now requires them to be installed in all new home construction. (Check with your local building official for further guidance to see if this is required in your area)
Existing homes can be easily retrofitted with TRRs using the same installation guidelines that apply to standard receptacles. TRRs should only be installed by a qualified electrician. TRRs are the only device specially tested by the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) to meet requirements set by the National Electrical Code. Plastic receptacle or outlet covers are NOT tested for tamper resistance.
