Renal colic is a a medical term that's used to describe what most people call kidney stone pain. It happens when when crystal-forming substances -- such as calcium, oxalate and uric acid -- accumulate in one or both of your kidneys. Stones typically resemble small pebbles, often just a fraction of an inch, although they sometimes grow as big as a golf ball.
If the stones stay in the kidney, like those pictured on the left, they usually cause no discomfort. However, when a stone moves from inside a kidney and into a ureter (the tube that carries urine from a kidney down to the bladder), pain -- renal colic -- can start.
The stone can block the flow of urine, causing swelling, inflammation -- and a whole lot of pain in the lower back, the side or "flank " area, or into the abdomen and groin area.
Pain from renal colic often comes in waves, fluctuating in intensity. It can be mild as minor, or so severe as to be debilitating.
