Some of you might have watched my recent video on the beautiful and amazing mushroom known as Lions mane. We learned that Lions mane can help treat neurological conditions due to its ability to repair and regenerate nerve cells. So following on from this, I wanted to share with you yet another amazing mushroom that is gaining popularity these days in humans and dogs too. Sometimes referred to as the King of Mushrooms, Chaga mushroom can assist in immune regulation, antiaging and has cancer fighting properties just to name a few. Is this mushroom suitable for your dog?? let’s find out today and see what makes it such a King mushroom and my top 5 reasons to giving your dog this amazing fungus.

When I look at chaga in the wild and compare it to Lions mane, it really is not such a pretty sight. Although known as a mushroom, in reality, it is actually a canker or hard mass of woody tissue that grows on Birch trees in the northern hemisphere. It appears like a large black or dark lump on the tree characterized by orange tissue. But don’t let looks deceive you. While not the most beautiful, this King of mushrooms gains its name due to its amazing properties.
1. Your dogs immune system: When we think of Chaga, one of its best properties is its ability to regulate your dogs immune system. Has your dog has been having issues with allergies and autoimmune diseases that show and overactive immune system?? Or maybe they are the other way, with recurrent or chronic infections, showing an underactive immune system. Either way, this is where Chaga can really help. Herbs and mushrooms in this category are known as immune modulators and can regulate the immune system up or down into balance depending on the situation. Taking chaga if your dog has recurrent infections or allergies as well as autoimmune diseases can assist in balancing out the immune system and therefore reducing the incidence of these things from occurring.
2. Cancer In terms of active ingredients, Chaga is a powerhouse of antiaging compounds. Did you know that Chaga’s potency comes in part from the wood it grows on. Chaga is found in the wild growing on Birch trees and the interesting thing is that chaga draws its life force from the bark of this tree and forms a symbiotic or mutually beneficial relationship with the birch. The ability of Chaga to predigest the nutrients contained in the birch tree, allows it to deliver a potent medicine that can then benefit our dogs. Chaga is so powerful it has been shown to heal the birch tree on which it grows; that is, if the tree is dying, and a wild chaga is inserted, the tree can often survive. So what are these antiaging compounds?? one of the main ones is known as betulinic acid, along with beta glucans and other antioxidants. So let’s talk for a moment about betulinic acid. If your dog has been diagnosed with cancer, this is certainly one mushroom to consider. Betulinic acid has potent cancer fighting properties by activating what is known as apoptosis. Apoptosis is a process the body uses to kill off cells that are damaged or unwanted cells. By programming the death of these unwanted cells, apoptosis can stop uncontrolled cell division, which can reduce the incidence of cancer in our dogs bodys. Coupled with other antioxidants, Chaga is a powerful anticancer mushroom.
