toyota 5L denso fuel pump timing. this is the best of 3 videos as it was a bit of a mare to set the pump up.
although ive built several hundred diesel engines ive never set a pump up before as we supplied them as long engines (no pump fitted) or sent them to a diesel shop.
to set this denso pump i got a setting off the interweb of 0.64mm to 0.76mm. this is the depth of movement of the cam inside the fuel distibutor on the back of the pump. to measure the stroke insert a dial gauge in the bolt hole in the centre of the distributor plate, load 2mm onto the gauge to allow for wind back. then rotate the engine backwards until the gauge stops moving. zero the gauge as this is the start point, its around -2 teeth BTDC on the cambelt gear.
now slowly advance the crankshaft to TDC. check the reading on the gauge. if its wrong rotate the pump to get the correct reading. recheck the reading after tightening the pump back to the cover as it will change the reading, you might have to adjust a bit too far to allow for change when you tighten up the pump.
the readings i used referred to the cold start device being removed. i didnt know what that was as there wasnt 1 fitted but id clocked its location as there was a homemade blanking plate and odd bolts on the side of the pump.
the settings with the device fitted were 0.45mm- 0.65mm
