In the past decade, there has been a significant breakthrough in our understanding of soil organic matter formation and the carbon cycle. Now we increasingly know that humus actually may not exist in soil, and soil microbes not just are responsible for decomposition, but also contribute directly to soil organic matter formation. This brand new mechanistic understanding has been described as the soil “microbial carbon pump (MCP).”
