In Burkina Faso, at least 35 civilians, mostly women, have been killed in an attack when armed men launched an assault on an army base and the nearby town of Arbinda.
According to the government, 80 armed men were also killed. There has been no claim of responsibility so far.
All Christmas celebrations have been cancelled in Burkina Faso and the president declared 48 hours of national mourning.
