Skill Name:
1 Foot Glide - Moving
Introduction of the Movement:
The 1 Foot Glide position is used to help the Player work on their balance, leg strength, core strength and to gain confidence while moving in the “Hockey Ready Position”. It also teaches the Player what gliding feels like.
The 1 Foot Glide position can be performed every day in practice. Once this movement is perfected, other skating skills can be built on top of it.
The 1 Foot Glide position is foundational for all hockey skating skills in that it requires balance, strength, and coordination to be performed effectively.
Done properly, the skater will increase core strength, leg strength, knee bend awareness, and proper body angle to the ice.
Essential Movement:
While moving, the Player begins to sit down into the 2 Foot Glide Ready position. Feet are hip-width apart and the Player has equal weight on each foot. The Player holds two hands on their stick, with core engaged, leaning slightly forward so they are balanced on the middle front part of their blade. Next, the Player shifts their weight to one foot and lifts the opposite foot to glide in a straight line on one foot.
Segmented Movement:
-The Player begins to skate.
-The Player enters the 2 foot glide position, keeping their feet hip-width apart on the flats of their blades.
-The Player shifts their weight to one foot, lifts up the opposite foot.
-The Player now glides on one foot, on the flat of the blade.
-The movement is complete when the Player has completed the desired distance in the 1 Foot Glide position.
Common Errors:
-Not shifting the weight to one foot causes a fall to the inside edge which causes the Player to turn instead of gliding in a straight line
-Knees not bent enough causes a decrease in balance and stability.
Core not engaged will cause upper body to collapse.
