A truly awe inspiring place. It is hard to understand the power of this waterfall until you walk down to the lower level and stand within 20m of its thunderous face.
Proper waterproof clothing is required to get this close and not end up saturated. There is a secondary viewing area (this is the west side easily accessible by car) about 125m back but if you have made the effort to go to Dettifoss, this would be a waste.
Feeling the power of the wind blowing off the waterfall is part of the experience (as is the inevitable drenching) and so even if you only use the waterproof clothing for this one visit during your stay, it was worth carrying all the way from home.
