Mali: Al-Qaeda-Linked JNIM Terrorists Attacks Military Camp & Airport in Bamako | Firstpost Africa

A rare double attack jolted the junta-ruled nation of Mali in West Africa. Al-Qaeda-linked JNIM carried out what it called a "special operation" and launched attacks on a military training centre and a military airport in Mali's capital Bamako. Videos on social media showed JNIM terrorists firing into the windows of the Presidential hangar at the airport. Reports say the attackers also used rocket launchers. Mali's military said that several terrorists had been neutralised and a number of military personnel were also killed. The West African country's military rulers, who took over power in a coup in 2020, claim they have made progress in tackling Islamist insurgency and separatism. Mali dumped its Western partner France and turned to Russia for security. However, a series of attacks in recent months have raised doubts about the ability of Russia-backed Wagner forces to fight Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State in West Africa.
