SolarWinds Orion NPM Hack - Microsoft, FireEye confirm SolarWinds supply chain attack
Known victims so far include the US Treasury, the US NTIA, and FireEye itself.
Reports are coming out that last week's Fireeye hack could have been a result of a backdoor planted in legitimate software produced by Solarwinds. Specifically, the Solarwinds Orion software is being used by Hackers believed to be operating on behalf of a foreign government that has breached software provider SolarWinds and then deployed a malware-laced update for its Orion software to infect the networks of multiple US companies, Like Fireeye Cybersecurity, and government networks.
We would imagine we will be hearing from more companies as we did with Fireeye and the U.S. treasury department governments in the coming weeks due to the nature of the attack and how well hidden the methods of attack are.
It appears Fireeye is involved in helping Solarwinds identify the hack. We look at the methods used in this cyber attack. We fully expect to hear from many other private companies and governments, including more cyber attacks from U.S. federal state, and local governments over the coming days.
