Turkey picked up and moved part of an historic mosque, Monday, December 16, from the ancient town of Hasankeyf that will soon be underwater following a controversial dam project.
The Er Rizk Mosque is the last structure being relocated from the 12,000 year old town before it is fully submerged by floodwaters.
Turkey started to fill the dam further downstream on the Tigris river in July, where nearby villages have already been vacated and are partially submerged. The river will begin to rise in Hasankeyf in the next few months.
In a bid to attract tourists, eight historic structures form the ancient town are being moved to Yeni Hasankeyf, including the mosque, a massive tomb and an ancient Turkish bath.
The mosque will be relocated in four parts, with the first being moved on Monday. (REUTERS)
