Alderman’s (Owlaman’s & before that Osmand’s) Barrow of Exmoor National Park is a remote burial mound dating from the Bronze Age (2400-1500BC). Bowl Barrows like Alderman’s are funerary monuments constructed as earthen or rubble mounds, sometimes ditched, which covered single or multiple burials. Bowl barrows are found in a range of sizes across Exmoor from 2-35m in diameter, many of those found on the moor are on or close to the summits of the three east west ridges which cross the moor. Alderman’s occupies a prominent location and forms a major visual element of the modern landscape.
Alderman’s Barrow measures 24 metes in diameter and is disturbed by later road construction and probable excavation. Despite this possible antiquarian disturbance in the 18th Century and even burial robbery long before that, Alderman’s Barrow survives to this day and sits prominently in the landscape as a reminder of the Exmoor’s rich prehistoric past.
