Gangnam-daero is a busy north-south artery through the Gangnam District in southern Seoul. In my mind, I divide it into two zones: the north zone between Sinsa Station and Gangnam Station, and the south zone between Gangnam Station and Yangjae Station.
Sinsa and Yangjae are both stops on Seoul Subway Line 3, but that line does not follow Gangnam-daero. It runs west from Sinsa, cuts south a couple of stops later at the Gangnam Express Bus Terminal, then a couple of stops after that it cuts back to the east at the Nambu Bus Terminal just before Yangjae Station.
Yangjae and Gangnam Stations are connected by the Sinbundang Line (the New Bundang Line, which isn't so new anymore). At the time of this video, work has been ongoing for a three years or so to extend the line north from Gangnam Station to Sinsa Station.
Gangnam-daero is frequently busy, especially so during the morning and evening rush hours. The whole boulevard is a busy commercial district, but the area immediately surrounding Gangnam station never sleeps: it's also a popular shopping and entertainment district.
This walk takes place just after the morning rush hour. We start from inside Gangnam Station, then exit via Gate 7, one of the gates of the original Line 2 section of the station. Not long after we start (02:48), we get a glimpse of two of the glass skyscrapers in Samsung Town, the office park Samsung constructed in the early 2000's, and to which they moved from the old Samsung town near Namedaemun in central Seoul.
From the beginning, we see one office building after another on both sides of the street, an architectural mix from the 80's, 90's, 00's and 10's. Down the side streets we get glimpses of more office buildings and the occasional apartment complex.
Next we pass Gangnam Station Gates 6 and 5, part of the Sinbundang Line section of the station. We then come to the Woosung Apartments Intersection (07:11). The apartment complex for which the four-way is named was constructed in 1979, but it no longer exists. The complex was demolished and replaced with Raemian Leaders One, a Samsung brand, which opened in 2018.
Later, around the well-known Bang Bang Intersection (baengbaeng sageori - 13:59), the office buildings get shorter, the foot traffic lighter. The intersection is named for the flagship store of a casual clothing company called Bang Bang (visible across the intersection at 14:07, just to the left of the building on the corner). They're out of sight on the left side of Saimdang-ro to our right (07:33).
At the Yangjae Station intersection (21:03), space suddenly opens up. The intersection is an overpass, with another busy thoroughfare running beneath. To the south, the rows of office buildings fade away. Were we to continue on, we'd find a residential area on our left, and on our right we'd see Yangjae Citizen's Forest, the AT Center (exhibitions and conventions), Yangjae Flower Market, the Yangjae branch of Nonghyup Hanaro Club (a wholesale market), and not far around the corner, the Yangjae Costco.
But that's all for another walk. On this walk, we head down into Gate 2 Yangjae Station and call it quits.
