(6 Jul 2015) Thai authorities announced on Monday they have seized more than 200 kilogrammes (440 pounds) of ivory, hidden in luggage shipped out from the Republic of Congo to Laos.
About 130 elephant tusks and pieces were found in boxes as they were in transit at Bangkok airport on Friday.
The Deputy Director General of the Thai Customs Department, Chamroen Photiyod, said officials had received a tip-off and had tracked the shipment since it left Addis Ababa airport in Ethiopia.
He said the ivory, which was worth around 10 million Baht (295 thousand US dollars) was destined for Laos.
This is the 11th ivory seizure by the Thai Customs Department so far this year.
