While doing several blessing ceremonies at the Sycuan Cultural Center for the Lummi Totem Pole Journey to Bring Tokitae Home to the Salish Sea, we had the chance to talk with Shawnee, Lenape scholar and author Steven Newcomb. He is co-founder and co-director of the Indigenous Law Institute. He has been studying and writing about U.S. federal Indian law and policy since the early 1980s, particularly the application of international law to indigenous nations and peoples.
The 2018 Lummi Totem Pole Journey is traveling from Lummi Nation in NW Washington down to Miami, Florida to raise awareness about Tokitae, the last remaining Salish orca alive in captivity. Lummi are demanding that Tokitae be allowed to retire and to return home to her mother, her family and her relatives in her ancestral waters.
