Adam Brown grew up in Cronulla spending his days surfing, skating, eating hot chips and hanging out with his mates.
His first sponsors were Hot Buttered, Rip Curl, Quicksilver etc. providing the opportunity to compete in the world tour from 1990 – 1993 with mixed results.
The hi-lights were coming 17th in Japan, Spain & Hawaii & definitely seeing the world. Life on tour was fun, to say the least! A 21-year-old with all the 'opportunities' a tour offers.
The worst moment of the tour would have had to be sleeping in for the first round heat in Reunion Island after a 20+ hour flight. Which was ironic as it is also my favourite location - the waves and people were amazing & the country - beautiful.
The trip home from Reunion Island was memorable (sort of), the tour team had the airline remove the back row of seats to fit everyone's surfboards which delayed the flight by approx. 15 hours. This led to the team idle in the airport bar and ended with us drinking the bar dry, replenishing stocks in duty-free & then finally climbing on board. The hostess' locking themselves in the cock-pit for fear of being consumed by the 'ruckus' and the occasional flying bread roll to the side of the head.
Fast forward to 2012, a slightly irresponsible creative father of 3 children, a husband and a carpenter with a new curiosity. Bespoke surfing; that is the building, shaping, pyrography (wood burning) and spray paint design of Alaia surfboards.
This curiosity provided the challenge of learning the art all over again and the inspiration needed outside the daily grind.
Key influencers were and still are Rob Machado's 'In the Present', shapers such as Tom Wegener, Mick Mackie, Ryan Lovelace and surfers such as Richard Marsh, Gary Green (Greeny), Barry Tyte (Fanga), Sean Charters (Charge), Rob Machado & Ryan Burch.
Today, a full-time carpenter with a part-time start-up business Adam is still building, shaping & adding artistic designs (which are influenced by his other passion 'tattoos' - another story) to his Alaia surfboards as well as hand-surfers, bespoke furniture and other timber 'creations'.
