Bobby (Robert) Hand, Movement Disorders Program Coordinator at VCU Health and the VCU Parkinson's & Movement Disorders Center, provides video examples of various exercises to address aspects of Parkinson's disease.
Not only can this exercise challenge your stability by placing you in a tandem stance, but it also begins to address potential visual deficits. Keeping your eyes on your hands as you rotate your body serves as a VOR Cancellation manuever. VOR, or vestibulo-ocular reflex, is involved with stabilizing gaze while the head is in movement.
Sample Routine:
10-20 repetitions, alternating sides and completing full 180-degree rotations. Try to take 3-5 seconds, or more, between each twist.
Level 1 = Bodyweight
Level 2 = Add some weight/resistance
