A walk around the streets of Newcastle upon Tyne on a sunny day in September.
No fog on the Tyne on this day! A very sunny day in September, and we have a look at some of the amazing architecture in this beautiful city.
Starting at Haymarket, we wander past St Thomas’s church to the amazing civic centre. There’s a couple of very impressive sculptures here, one perched up on a wall, one flying through a pond in a quiet area at the back of the building. A nearby pub is named after this sculpt, the Five Swans.
Then we head into the busy shopping area, past the famous Fenwick store, and round to Grey’s Monument. Through the crowds and into the absolutely beautiful Central Arcade, a tiled Edwardian shopping arcade which is strangely devoid of people. As we exit the arcade we see the Theatre Royal with it’s portico entrance. This marks the start of Grey Street, possibly the finest street in all of Britain?
Sadly, there are some roadworks happening at the moment, which does spoil the experience a little. The road sweeps down the hill in a graceful arc towards the river and bridges. On each side the grand buildings are now home to mostly shops and bars. You could try a different one each night if you stayed for a month!
Finally, we get to the bridge section. We are nearing the river now, the bridges soar overhead to carry traffic over the river, and over the buildings. I always find this a fascinating part of town. We end at the river, with a final farewell gift from a juvenile gull.
