This is a later re-release of the song WITHOUT the siren sound effects. The story is said to be, that when this song was played over the radio, it caused drivers to randomly pull over, thinking it was a real siren coming from somewhere. Complaints followed, and the record company re-released the records with NO siren sound effects. Now, One would think they would simply alter the Promo records that they sent out to the radio stations, right?? I guess not.
From another site:
On early copies of this song, it opens with the wail of a police siren, which is later heard during the instrumental bridge. The siren sounded (for its time) so realistic that some drivers pulled over to the side of the road when they heard the song on their car radios. When the confusion was discovered, Rare Earth (the record company that Taylor was signed with) gave radio stations (particularly those that were too skeptical and/or scared to play the song) a second version without the siren.
This "NO SIREN" version is pressed on crap Styrene unlike it's sister with the siren. There is no mention of being any kind of DJ or Promo copy or "siren-less"at all.
From the R. Dean Taylor website:
When "Indiana Wants Me" was released, the content was controversial. We had to remove the police siren to get airplay in California. That's why there are some versions without the sound effects.
