The popular American baritone was primarily a concert and radio singer, but did have a significant operatic background as well. He debuted in La Traviata at the Met in1934, the same year this aria from Heriodade was recorded. Certainly his fame derived primarily from his radio work. He was heard on numerous music programs including "Five Star Theater," "Home on the Range," RCA Magic Key," "Ford Sunday Evening Hour," and "The Bell Telephone Hour." In 1945 he began the sereies by which he is best rememberd: " The Westinghouse Hour." He was nothing if not versatile! Here, he delivers a very nice rendition of the aria from Herodiade. While his French may not pass muster with purists, the total performance is nonetheless convincing, and certainly pleasant listening.
