During the Second World War, there was one German Tank Commander who named has lived on for his destructive and brutal attacks against the Allies following the Normandy Invasion. Michael Wittmann was celebrated within Nazi Germany as a hero, and as one of the most feared weapons of the conflict. He was celebrated by Hitler, and was quoted to have knocked out around 120 enemy tanks and vehicles. Wittmann saw conflict in many different operations, such as the Invasion of Poland, The Normandy Operations and even served on the Eastern Front.
During the Battle of Villers-Bocage, Wittmann and his Tiger I Tank went on the rampage, and in the space of 15 minutes he knocked out dozens of Cromwell tanks, military vehicles and he laid waste to the British equipment there. This was celebrated all across Germany, and made him a hero. However within a month of his heroic actions, Wittmann was killed after facing a British tank gunner who was noted for his shot. Near to an Orchard close to Caen, Wittmann and a couple of Tiger Tanks moved towards the British but were unaware they were being watched.
They were fired upon by a Sherman Firefly who ambushed them. The gunner Joe Ekins first took out the rear tank, before Wittmann's tank, Tiger I 007 turned to fire at the Firefly and missed. After regrouping, Ekins fired a shot into Wittmann's tank, and this instantly exploded knocking the turret straight off. In this exchange of fire, the Sherman Firefly destroyed 3 Tiger Tanks in a matter of minutes, and Michael Wittmann, the celebrated Panzer Ace was killed.
